Raccoon Logic's Breakaway Hockey League Prioritizes Long-Term Player Retention Over NHL Replacement Claims
Raccoon Logic is taking a measured approach to Breakaway Hockey League, focusing on accessible yet skill-based 4v4 competitive hockey for PC. Rather than positioning itself as an NHL killer, the studio plans Early Access and community-driven development.

Raccoon Logic is charting a deliberately cautious path with Breakaway Hockey League, its upcoming 4v4 competitive hockey game for PC. After revealing the project in August, the studio has clarified that it's not attempting to dethrone EA Sports' NHL franchise, but instead building a game designed for both immediate enjoyment and long-term mastery.
The core philosophy centers on accessibility paired with competitive depth. Game Designer Hugo Agostinho explained the balance the team is targeting: "We really want you to immediately come in and do something really cool, whether it's a hit, a shot, a pass, but still have that skill depth where you can have fun in 30 seconds, but you can play for like a hundred-plus hours."
This approach reflects Raccoon Logic's awareness of how quickly multiplayer games can lose players. The studio draws a parallel to Steam's role as a modern arcade, where players discover new experiences, enjoy them briefly, and move on. The challenge lies in creating something that keeps players engaged beyond the initial discovery phase. "There's a difference between loving something and wanting to master it over 100 hours versus, like, this is fun for like 5 to 10 hours," Agostinho said.
Game Director Steve Masters emphasized that avoiding hyperbolic marketing is deliberate strategy. "I want to get out early with something where we're, you know, super honest about where we're at and build with the community, and make sure we develop and create that community over time rather than come in as like, 'We're the new NHL killer' and overhype it." Masters added that maintaining focus on the core game serves the project's long-term interests.
Breakaway Hockey League will launch in Early Access, allowing Raccoon Logic to incorporate player feedback into ongoing development. The studio began work on the game in January 2024, deliberately adopting a faster development cycle than its previous projects. Rather than delaying launch until every planned feature is complete, the team wants to establish solid foundational gameplay first.
Future additions may include customization options, clubs, and team identity systems, but these are not immediate priorities. "Right now we're making a good hockey game," Masters said. "And if you come in and join us right now, you can help us shape that."
Breakaway Hockey League is currently available to wishlist on Steam, with a first gameplay trailer and Early Access release planned for later dates.
