Break The Night, a hack-and-slash action game with roguelike elements, recently showed off a combat demo at SAGExpo, the annual event that began as a Sonic fan game showcase but now hosts a broader range of independent titles.

The game follows three roommates who become trapped in the Limit, described as a space between realities, after boarding a mysterious train. While trying to escape, they encounter a corrupting entity and magical creatures that grant them transformative abilities.

The demo emphasizes combat over narrative. Players can chain basic combos with a single button, launch or slam enemies into the air with another attack, and use a spin move for wide-area damage. These abilities are presented as cards, hinting at roguelike progression where players can collect different cards with limited uses to create varied combinations.

Movement stands out as a particular strength. A dash mechanic combined with well-timed jumps enables fluid traversal similar to techniques found in Celeste, rewarding player skill. The character designs reflect late 2000s aesthetics, moving beyond the Y2K revival that has dominated recent years.

The demo is currently available outside Steam, though the game is already wishlisted on the platform. While the combat feels mechanically narrow in its current form, the overall presentation and movement systems suggest strong foundations for further development.
