Borderlands 4 Player Count Spikes Amid Free Weekend and Loveless DLC Release

The player count for Borderlands 4 has surged on Steam, reaching levels not seen since shortly after the game launched in September 2025. The resurgence is driven by two main factors: an active free weekend promotion on Steam and the release of a highly anticipated new DLC character.

Known as Loveless the Hacker, the newly added Vault Hunter has quickly captured the attention of the game's community. Loveless is described as a cybernetically enhanced fighter with a split psyche who relies on high agility and aggression to defeat her opponents. However, much of the online conversation has focused on her cosmetics. Players can access her revealing exclusive skin by purchasing the Ornate Order Pack for $9.99, or by owning the Super Deluxe Edition or the Vault Hunter Pack.

Prior to this surge, the game had been struggling to maintain a large player base. After peaking at 304,000 concurrent players on Steam at launch, the player count settled to around 15,000 within its first seven weeks. In recent weeks, daily peak concurrent numbers on Steam had fallen to approximately 2,400. Following the recent updates, the peak concurrent player count shot up to more than 20,000, representing the game's largest single-day player spike since its release window.

Developed by Gearbox, the looter-shooter released to a mixed reception last year. This sudden influx of users has revitalized matchmaking pools, though it remains to be seen how many players will purchase the full game once the Steam free weekend concludes.
