The Blood of Dawnwalker Built on $40 Million Budget, Rebel Wolves Grew Team to 160
Rebel Wolves' vampire-themed action RPG achieved over 1 million sales in its first week with NetEase's $40 million investment. Director Konrad Tomaszkiewicz discussed how the studio managed scope and team growth during development.

Rebel Wolves' The Blood of Dawnwalker has become one of the standout releases of 2026, selling over 1 million copies in its first week and earning strong reviews from critics and players. A recent Bloomberg report reveals the game was developed on a $40 million budget from NetEase, a relatively modest investment compared to many triple-A titles.
Director Konrad Tomaszkiewicz conceived the idea in 2022 and initially self-funded the project while assembling a team to create a prototype and pitch document. By the end of 2022, NetEase took notice and acquired a 26 percent stake in Rebel Wolves, providing the $40 million development budget. The studio spent 2023 recruiting staff, with production beginning at the end of that year.
The team grew significantly during development. Rebel Wolves started 2024 with around 90 employees but expanded to 160 as the project evolved. Tomaszkiewicz explained the expansion in a statement: "We sat in the production room and counted everything. When we started to work, the game—like always—grew." He noted that contractors were brought on full-time as needed. "It's still letting me know everyone. I can speak with everyone every day. I still feel like a creator and not a manager, which is the place I want to be."
Writer Jakub Szamalek acknowledged the growth trajectory, saying the studio is "aware of this growth, and we are tracking it. We don't want to overdo it." Bandai Namco handled publishing and marketing duties.
The team prioritized stability over aggressive timelines. Rather than forcing overtime to hit a June release target, they chose a more crowded September window. Tomaszkiewicz said the decision to keep the game's foundations consistent with the original pitch deck helped them meet their schedule. "In the end, we landed in a really good production without a lot of big problems," he concluded.
Looking ahead, New Game Plus is in development for The Blood of Dawnwalker, though no release date has been announced. Rebel Wolves is already preparing future entries in the franchise, with save data set to carry over between games. The studio is currently recruiting for a lead writer on the next project. Whether future titles will use the same time mechanic remains undecided.
