Battlefield 3 Crowned Best in Series as Franchise Reflects on Two Decades of Military Shooters
Insider Gaming's comprehensive ranking of all Battlefield games places Battlefield 3 at the top, calling it a masterpiece that still holds up today. The ranking also assesses Battlefield 6, released in October 2025, as a resurgence that has revived the

Battlefield has established itself as one of gaming's most iconic first-person shooter franchises over more than two decades, standing alongside Medal of Honor and Call of Duty as a high-tier military shooter with substantial depth. A comprehensive ranking of the entire series reveals how the franchise has evolved, stumbled, and occasionally reclaimed its footing.
Battlefield 3, released in 2011, emerges as the definitive entry in the series. The game remains a masterpiece of first-person shooter design that still holds up under scrutiny today. It effortlessly competed against contemporary titles like Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, Killzone 3, and Crysis 2. With extensive post-launch content, instantly recognisable maps that continue to be revived in newer Battlefield titles, jaw-dropping visuals for its era, and mountains of destruction, Battlefield 3 set the standard for the franchise. It delivered both a fantastic and gripping campaign with cooperative missions alongside multiplayer that felt compelling to play repeatedly. The Portal mode in recent Battlefield titles constantly reconstructs Battlefield 3's experiences, underscoring its lasting influence.
Battlefield 1 ranks as the second-best entry and holds the distinction of being the best-selling Battlefield game ever. Released after the poorly-received Battlefield Hardline, it represented an emotional and heart-wrenching experience that redefined the series. The campaign offered a cutting-edge portrayal of World War I, while the multiplayer ecosystem felt brutally realistic and immersive. Players encountered an authentic, visually flawless, and gritty representation of one of history's most devastating wars.
Bad Company 2, released in 2010, rounds out the top three. This entry took everything its predecessor accomplished and improved upon it, introducing a better story, more humour, larger maps, and a more immersive multiplayer experience. Fans continue to anticipate a resurgence of the Bad Company sub-franchise despite the series moving forward.
Battlefield 4 secured strong standing within the franchise, boasting one of the best campaigns in the series with characters who would resurface almost a decade later in Battlefield 2042. Its multiplayer featured balanced and memorable modes, fantastic destruction mechanics, multi-faceted combat roles, and some of the greatest maps ever created. As the first Battlefield title on Xbox One and PS4, it represented a technical marvel and maintains an active community today.
Battlefield 2, technically the third game in the series, ranked highest on Metacritic among all Battlefield titles. Released three years after the original, it represented a significant step forward and became one of the most collaborative shooters of its time, establishing itself as one of the best team-based first-person shooters ever made.
Battlefield 6, released in October 2025, lands in sixth place despite significant divisiveness surrounding the title. While its campaign component is weak, the multiplayer platform shows substance and fan service that has impressed both new and veteran players. Positioned as a resurgence that has revived a floundering franchise, Battlefield 6 marks the first title fans have spoken highly of since Battlefield 1 in many regions. The forthcoming free-to-play battle royale mode and additional content in the pipeline promise further development.
Lower in the rankings, Battlefield: Bad Company, released in 2008, introduced a four-character ensemble followed across two releases. The game packed humour, one-liners, and pleasing action sequences across semi-linear maps. The servers for this title were recently taken offline, representing a nostalgic loss for the community.
Battlefield 5 received criticism but was not a terrible entry. It featured some of the best attributes ever seen in the series, including construction and customisation options. The game offered gorgeous maps, exhilarating combat mechanics, and substantial post-launch content alongside battle royale functionality. However, it became viewed as the beginning of the franchise's decline and could not match the success of its predecessor, Battlefield 1.
Battlefield 2042 launched in poor condition but has undergone redemption through hundreds of post-launch changes. Those who abandoned the game at release may not remember it fondly, yet it has evolved into at least a good game if not a great one. Its placement on rankings remains difficult to determine given this trajectory.
The series also explored unconventional territory. Battlefield 2142, a futuristic entry set two centuries in the future, featured mechs and unexpected innovation. While it was not terrible and boasted enjoyable combat sequences and solid multiplayer, it represented an almost unexpected departure from the series' focus on real-world conflicts.
Battlefield Vietnam, released in 2004 exclusively on PC as the second game in the franchise, marked an odd jump from World War II to jungle warfare. Though slightly more visceral than its predecessor, it did not resonate significantly, and the Vietnam theatre has not been revisited except for a brief Bad Company expansion.
Battlefield 1942, released in 2002, marks where the entire franchise began. It was a remarkable game for its era, boasting near-unparalleled realism and becoming one of the best-selling games of its day. Though it kick-started the franchise, its legacy is not sufficient to rank it at the top of the series.
Battlefield Hardline represents the lowest point in the franchise's history. This 2008 release shifted the formula toward a 'Cops vs. Robbers' foundation that never aligned with the classic Battlefield approach. Despite an entertaining campaign and visually pleasing presentation, it never felt like a true Battlefield experience and marked a strange paradigm shift that failed to resonate with the community.
