ATOM RPG 2 Abandons Top-Down Design for Third-Person Open World
AtomTeam's sequel to the Fallout-inspired RPG shifts to a third-person perspective and introduces a massive 1,225 km² open world with survival mechanics, multiplayer support for up to four players, and vehicular exploration including tanks.

AtomTeam is reinventing ATOM RPG for its sequel, moving away from the top-down perspective that defined the original 2018 release. ATOM RPG 2 adopts a third-person viewpoint and expands into a sprawling open-world format designed around survival gameplay.
The new game sprawls across 1,225 km² of a Caspian-style wasteland divided into multiple biomes. Players can explore freely, either solo or with up to three other players in cooperative multiplayer. The world emphasizes emergent gameplay and player choice, offering varied ways to traverse the landscape.
Survival mechanics anchor the experience. The game tracks health, temperature, energy, hydration, and injuries, creating a resource management loop typical of the post-apocalyptic survival genre. Transportation options range from skis and customizable cars to tanks in endgame content.
The perspective shift was deliberate. Co-founder Dmytro Martynenko explained that the team wanted ATOM RPG 2 to feel distinct from the original and attract a broader audience. At gaming conventions, the third-person approach has resonated with younger players who might not have engaged with a top-down survival title.
While the original ATOM RPG maintained a more restricted, GURPS-inspired design focused on non-linear storytelling, ATOM RPG 2 prioritizes scale and systemic depth. Martynenko noted that the team has discussed potential modifications that could eventually support up to 100 concurrent players on the same map, though no timeline was provided.
The original ATOM RPG never achieved a large player base despite strong foundational design. Martynenko and AtomTeam are banking on the sequel's accessibility and scope to find a wider audience. Early builds shown at the Tokyo Game Show and Gamescom have generated interest from press and attendees.
ATOM RPG 2 is currently available to wishlist on Steam.
