Blizzard veteran Rob Pardo leads Bonfire Studios into Arkheron, a competitive PvP dungeon crawler inspired by Diablo and Hades
After nearly a decade of development, Arkheron arrives in crossplay beta on September 25. The game blends fast-paced action combat with loot-driven progression across a mysterious tower, combining the strategic depth of dungeon crawlers with squad-based

Arkheron is an unusual hybrid of fast PvP action and dungeon crawler design. Players compete in squads to climb an evolving tower, collecting loot and battling other teams in real-time, precision-based combat inspired by Hades. The game's 45-player format draws parallels to battle royale scale but explicitly avoids that genre, instead focusing on loot progression and vertical tower ascension.
The game's setting is equally distinctive: a mysterious purgatory built from the memories of lost souls. Players inhabit resurrected spirits called echoes, navigating a dark-fantasy tower with visual style reminiscent of the Backrooms internet concept. As echoes climb, they uncover secrets about the vanguards and the tower itself, though only one team can reach the top each match.
Rob Pardo, CEO of developer Bonfire Studios and former Chief Creative Officer at Blizzard Entertainment, has guided the project through its lengthy development cycle. "I would say the years were absolutely worth it," Pardo said. "What's always tough is that 20/20 hindsight; you always wish you didn't go down so many dead ends where you could have made smarter choices at the time, but I think for me, because I've been through so many product cycles now at Blizzard, I think it comes with the territory of trying to innovate in a new direction creatively."
Early playtests over the past year shaped Arkheron's design significantly. Player feedback led to the creation of Spires, a smaller 3v3 competitive variant that will run alongside the standard 45-player format. Pardo described the alpha test as validating for developers who had worked quietly on the project for five to six years. "It was really validating for a lot of the developers who had spent five to six years working quietly on Arkheron. It was just across the board really positive, and I think after that we had to start rolling up our sleeves and do the work of hearing the harder feedback and figuring out what we want to change in the game."
The crossplay beta beginning September 25 will bring Arkheron to PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X simultaneously. This marks a critical moment for Bonfire as it attempts to build a lasting audience across platforms, a persistent challenge for multiplayer-only titles.
Pardo emphasized that his role at Bonfire differs from his creative leadership at Blizzard. He focuses on team support and studio culture while applying development principles from his time creating Diablo, World of Warcraft, and StarCraft. "I'm not in the creative driving seat, but my role needs to be about taking care of the whole team and the studio," he said. "There are a lot of things that Blizzard did really well while I was there, which is like a really good iterative development process, or how do we bring the community around the games."
A release date remains unannounced. Despite the extended development period and the studio's founding nearly a decade ago, Bonfire continues refining Arkheron's competitive systems and world-building. "It's very much been an odyssey; there's just been ups and downs," Pardo reflected. "I think it's been, overall, a journey of joy, terror, and a story of resilience."
