Almost 20 Years Later, Arkane Founder Understands Valve's Cancellation of Ravenholm

Arkane founder Raphaël Colantonio recently reflected on the cancellation of the unreleased Ravenholm project, explaining that the decision ultimately came down to economics.

Nearly two decades after the cancellation of a standalone Ravenholm game developed by Arkane Studios, Arkane founder Raphaël Colantonio has shared his perspective on why the project was ultimately shelved. Speaking in an interview with Press Box PR, Colantonio explained that it took the team a decade to move past the initial pain of the cancellation, but time and maturity brought clarity to the business reality behind Valve's decision.

According to Colantonio, the project's fate came down to the economics surrounding Half-Life 2 and how its downloadable content packages were performing on the market. Valve had specific business ratios dictating expenditure versus returns, especially since overseeing external or spin-off titles required the attention of their entire organizational structure. Although Arkane had developed around 10 levels and poured immense creative energy into the game between 2005 and 2007, Colantonio noted that the project still required too much additional time to finish.

Reflecting on the collaboration, Colantonio views the partnership as an experimental endeavor for Valve, which had previously looked at other attempts before enlisting Arkane. Despite the disappointment, the collaboration yielded long-lasting creative benefits. It introduced Arkane to concept artist Viktor Antonov, whose distinct aesthetic heavily influenced both Half-Life and Arkane's later critically acclaimed title, Dishonored.
