Arc Raiders May Scrap Expedition System Completely Following Frozen Trail Update

Embark Studios could eliminate the Expedition system in Arc Raiders permanently. The extraction shooter previously halted its character wipe mechanic back in August after receiving fan complaints that the system felt underbaked and failed to justify the time required for progression. Developer plans originally pointed toward a revamped return for Expeditions in early 2027. However, comments from the development team indicate that the feature might not return at all.

Speaking with PCGamesN, executive producer Aleksander Grøndal discussed the status of the mechanic and the future direction of the game. Grøndal acknowledged that the system was imperfect and that the studio wants to implement significant changes. At the same time, he noted that discarding the feature is a real possibility. Grøndal stated that maybe they will scrap the whole system altogether and that the option remains on the table while the team figures out the next steps.

Expeditions serve as an optional soft-wipe mechanic designed as an endgame prestige pursuit rather than a standard economy balancer. Because only a small portion of the player base actively participated, the studio struggled to make the feature rewarding enough to pursue. Embark Studios adjusted the system through major Caravan windows since launch, but overall engagement remained low.

While players await further clarity on the long-term future of Expeditions, attention has shifted toward the upcoming Frozen Trail update. Launching on October 8, the wintry patch represents the largest update for Arc Raiders to date. The development team is dedicating all hands to the release in hopes of delivering larger changes following a series of minor seasonal adjustments. Expeditions will remain paused until months after the launch of Frozen Trail at the earliest.
