Embark Studios Pauses ARC Raiders Expeditions Until Early 2027 for Major Overhaul
The fifth Expedition window opens September 8 as the final one before a lengthy hiatus. Embark acknowledges player feedback on departure windows, rewards, and new-player accessibility requires fundamental changes rather than incremental fixes.
Embark Studios has announced that ARC Raiders' Expeditions system will go on hiatus after the upcoming fifth Expedition, with no further Expeditions planned until early 2027. The decision follows what the developer describes as "mountains of feedback" highlighting persistent issues with the prestige-style system that lets high-level players reset their Raider's progress for permanent and temporary rewards.
In a blog post published today, Embark stated that problems including tight departure windows, the reward structure, and accessibility for newer players "need more than incremental fixes. They call for bigger changes." The fifth Expedition will run from September 8 at 4:00 AM PT (7:00 AM ET) through September 29, giving players a three-week window to prepare their Caravans and depart. After that, the system will be paused entirely while the studio works on a comprehensive redesign.
Expeditions have been a divisive feature since their introduction. Functionally similar to prestiging in Call of Duty, they allow players to voluntarily wipe their character back to level one with an empty stash in exchange for upgrades, additional Skill Points, and expanded Stash Space. However, many community members have questioned whether the rewards justify sacrificing accumulated progress, and Embark has been adjusting the system repeatedly since launch.
The pause creates a notable gap in the endgame loop. Historically, ARC Raiders has timed new content releases just before Expedition windows, meaning players planning to wipe couldn't engage with fresh rewards until after the Expedition concluded. The upcoming Frozen Trail update, scheduled for October 8, will now launch without an Expedition running alongside it—a change GamesRadar+ noted "solves that problem quite tidily" but also removes a core progression driver for dedicated players.
Embark detailed several immediate changes arriving with the fifth Expedition. Players will no longer automatically reset their quests when embarking; instead, quest reset becomes optional. Since the Hullcracker Blueprint is tied to the quest line, the studio says it will provide alternative acquisition methods. Any consecutive Expedition buffs already earned will persist through the hiatus, and partially completed Caravans will be converted into Ermal Vouchers of equal value, usable for Ermal offers, ARC Parts, firearms trades, or sold for Coin.
Community reaction has been mixed. On X, sentiment leans more hostile, while the ARC Raiders subreddit shows a wait-and-see approach. Many players acknowledge the system needs work but harbor reservations about Embark's ability to deliver satisfying changes—complicated by the fact that some players are content with Expeditions as they currently function. Steam recent reviews have dipped to 50% negative, adding pressure on the Frozen Trail update and the long-term Expedition redesign to rekindle player confidence.
Embark has promised to share more details on the revamped Expedition system in September. Until then, the fifth Expedition represents the last opportunity for players to prestige their Raiders for the foreseeable future, and the studio faces the challenge of keeping its most invested players engaged during a year-long absence of one of the extraction shooter's core progression systems.
