Embark Studios Reflects on ARC Raiders Growth, Player Dropouts, and Upcoming Frozen Trail Update
In a recent interview, ARC Raiders executive producer Aleksander Grøndal discussed the game's rapid growth, subsequent player drops after hitting the level cap, and the upcoming Frozen Trail update.
Embark Studios has opened up about the development and post-launch journey of ARC Raiders, a rare success in new gaming intellectual properties. Launched on October 30, 2026, by the Nexon division, the post-apocalyptic extraction shooter found millions of players within a short few months. Set in an underground world hiding from killer AI-based robots known as ARCs, scavengers risk going to the surface to retrieve scrap and extract back down. According to executive producer Aleksander Grøndal, the title was built over six years by a small core team of 60 people.
Following its launch between major titles like Battlefield 6 and Call of Duty: Black Ops 7, the game exploded in popularity and social media engagement, surprising the developers with its massive initial audience. However, this hyper growth brought significant challenges. Dedicated players rapidly progressed through the co-op experience, hitting the level 75 cap and running out of things to do. While the team initially attempted to keep pace through rapid live service updates, the voracious appetites of the player base proved difficult to match. Compounded by matchmaking experimentation that caused some players to lose patience, the game experienced player dropouts as fans moved on to other titles.
In response to these hurdles, Embark Studios bulked up its team from 60 to over 120 people, shifting strategy to slow down minor live updates and instead slow-cook a major installment. The upcoming Frozen Trail update, launching on October 8 with a new icy map, represents the developer's major attempt to lure back lapsed players. Nexon reported that total sales reached approximately 16 million copies at around $40 each following a gain of two million players in the June quarter. Despite the operational scaling, leadership ultimately aims to continue operating with a small group moving forward to tackle new projects and bigger live service endeavors.
