Analyst Chris Zukowski Argues the Steam “Friendslop” Niche Is Not Oversaturated
Gaming marketing expert Chris Zukowski shares observations on Steam's “friendslop” genre, noting that audience growth keeps pace with new releases and player demand remains strong.

Gaming marketing expert Chris Zukowski has shared new observations regarding the popularity and market saturation of "friendslop" games on Steam. Writing in a blog post on How To Market A Game, Zukowski addressed developer concerns over whether the niche has become too crowded to enter. He noted that while the number of available titles continues to rise, the overall audience for these games is growing alongside them in an upward trend.
Activity levels within the category have hit notable milestones over recent years. Zukowski observed that combined concurrent users for "friendslop" games on Steam surpassed 280,000 in March 2025 following the release of R.E.P.O. Although subsequent launches like RV There Yet? and Peak did not immediately break that record, the concurrent user count jumped to 366,000 users in June 2026 following the debut of Meccha Chameleon. Players in this category frequently switch between different titles every few months.
According to Zukowski's analysis, top projects typically capture over 50% of the active audience at launch, before their share drops to about 10% over the following three to nine months. However, capturing a smaller share does not equate to commercial failure. He highlighted Mage Arena, which peaked at just 11.75% of the total "friendslop" audience but still sold 624,000 copies and earned $3.69 million during its debut week.
Zukowski argued that market saturation cannot be measured solely by the volume of game releases. He pointed out that since the beginning of 2026, Steam has seen the release of 67 battle royale games, 785 RPGs, and 1,087 incremental games, with titles in each category successfully earning around $4 million. He characterizes the "friendslop" sector not as an oversaturated market, but as a space filled with content-hungry players ready to embrace new releases.
