Alienware Planning Fix for AW3926QW OLED Monitor Vignetting Issue

Alienware is developing a firmware update to address edge dimming on its 39-inch 5K2K OLED gaming monitor, adding user control over the feature causing the problem.

Alienware is working on a firmware fix for the AW3926QW, its 39-inch 5K2K OLED gaming monitor, to address a vignetting issue that has affected the otherwise well-received display.

The monitor uses LG's Tandem WOLED panel with RGB-stripe subpixels and is priced around $1,100. During gaming, the panel's edges gradually dim slightly, a behaviour caused by Convex Power Control (CPC), an LG Display WOLED protection feature designed to prevent burn-in by reducing brightness around the display's perimeter.

During a Reddit AMA, Kris Graft, Alienware's monitor expert, confirmed the company is actively testing a potential toggle for CPC in the monitor's on-screen display menu. "We hear the feedback on uniformity and are actively testing a potential toggle that could give customers more control over uniformity. We want to make sure we understand the full customer experience implications before we enable anything," Graft said.

The consideration centres on potential trade-offs. CPC exists partly to minimise burn-in risk for persistent UI elements like status bars and minimaps during extended gaming sessions. Disabling it could increase that risk, and Alienware may need to clarify how a CPC toggle affects the panel's burn-in warranty before releasing the update.

The vignetting problem does not appear to be a hardware limitation but a configuration issue, making a software solution feasible. Alienware has indicated more details will arrive soon.
