Xbox Game Studios Restructure Leaves Studio Lean as Activision and Bethesda Absorb Major Franchises

Microsoft's reorganization shifts Halo, Rare, and World's Edge to Activision, leaving Xbox Game Studios with a drastically reduced roster including only The Coalition, InXile Entertainment, Playground Games, Turn 10, Mojang, and Halo Studios.

Microsoft has restructured Xbox Game Studios in a significant reorganization that transfers control of major franchises to other divisions within the company. Activision now oversees Halo, Rare, and World's Edge, while Bethesda also expands its responsibilities under the new arrangement.

The changes leave Xbox Game Studios itself substantially smaller than before. The studios remaining under the XGS banner include The Coalition, developer of Gears of War: E-Day; InXile Entertainment, working on Clockwork Revolution; Playground Games and Turn 10, which handle the Forza and Fable franchises; Mojang, creator of Minecraft; and Halo Studios, now developing Halo: Campaign Evolved.

Xbox fan Klobrille published an infographic on September 22 to visualize the organizational changes. The graphic shows how Activision in particular has become substantially more stacked as part of the restructure. Klobrille noted that certain aspects of the reorganization remain unclear, including how Halo Studios fits within Activision's structure as a "Legacy Support" team.

Despite the reduction in Xbox Game Studios' direct roster, several of the remaining studios have new releases planned. The Coalition, Mojang, InXile, and Playground Games and Turn 10 all have games launching soon, though future branding decisions for these projects remain uncertain.

The restructure represents a significant shift in how Microsoft organizes its gaming divisions and raises questions about the future prominence of the Xbox Game Studios brand itself.
