Some Xbox Game Pass Subscribers to Keep Unlimited Cloud Gaming

Xbox announced on September 3 that Xbox Game Pass cloud gaming is moving to monthly limits. Under the new structure, Xbox Game Pass Ultimate will include 15 hours of cloud gaming, Xbox Game Pass Premium will receive 10 hours, and Xbox Game Pass Essential will get 5 hours. However, communication shared by subscribers indicates that these limits will not apply universally when they take effect in November.

According to subscriber emails shared on Reddit and reported by DayOne, existing auto-recurring subscriptions in Australia, Brazil, and Poland will be allowed to keep unlimited cloud gaming for now. The notification states that the upcoming November changes will only affect new purchases in those specific markets. To maintain these unlimited terms, players must remain on an auto-recurring Xbox Game Pass plan; canceling and later resubscribing will subject them to the new monthly limits.

These grandfathered terms are not guaranteed to be permanent. If Xbox changes these terms in the future, subscribers will receive at least 60 days' notice and can choose to cancel or change their subscription. Xbox has not publicly explained why certain markets are handling existing subscriptions differently, and there is no confirmation on whether consumer protection laws or subscriber feedback influenced this decision.

This grandfathering treatment does not apply globally. A U.S.-based writer for DayOne received an email confirming that November's hourly limits will apply to existing subscribers in the United States. New Xbox Game Pass purchases across all markets—including Australia, Brazil, and Poland—will still face the new monthly limits starting in November.

Once subscribers exhaust their allotted hours under the new system, they will have the option to purchase additional cloud playtime through the Xbox Store. Xbox has not yet announced the cost or increments of these additional hours. The company plans to share more details, including pricing, market availability, eligible games, and methods for tracking remaining cloud gaming hours, before the changes take effect in November.
