Xbox Game Pass Cloud Gaming Getting Monthly Hour Limits Starting November
Xbox Game Pass subscribers will face new monthly caps on cloud gaming starting in November. Essential tier gets 5 hours, Premium gets 10, and Ultimate gets 15. Xbox plans to sell additional hours but hasn't announced pricing yet.
Xbox Game Pass cloud gaming will shift to a metered model starting in November, introducing monthly hour limits based on subscription tier.
Essential subscribers will receive 5 hours of cloud gaming per month, Premium subscribers will get 10 hours, and Ultimate subscribers will get 15 hours. Users can currently stream without caps, but Xbox has already confirmed the change is coming.
The practical impact depends on individual play habits. A player streaming two hours each weekend uses around eight hours over four weeks. Premium's 10-hour allowance or Ultimate's 15 hours would cover that example, while Essential's five hours would fall short. At five hours of cloud gaming per week, even Ultimate subscribers won't have enough for a typical four-week period. The gap widens further at 10 hours per week.
Xbox clarified that only time spent streaming counts toward the limits. Sessions using games installed locally on a console or PC don't consume cloud gaming hours.
After using their included hours, Game Pass members will be able to purchase additional cloud playtime through the Xbox Store. Xbox also plans to sell cloud playtime to non-subscribers so they can stream games they own on supported devices. However, not every owned game will be streamable, and availability may vary by region.
Xbox has not yet announced prices for extra hours or specified which games remain eligible for streaming. The company also hasn't detailed how the usage meter will track and display remaining time or the exact reset rules and time-counting mechanics.
Xbox says it will provide more information in November about extra-hour pricing, purchasing options, eligible games, and how subscribers can check their remaining time. Available hours, purchasing options, and cloud gaming features may differ by market.
For regular cloud gaming users, Ultimate's 15-hour limit represents a relatively modest monthly allowance. The eventual price of additional hours will be the key factor in determining whether the new system increases the overall cost of playing through the cloud.
