Xbox Chief Technology Officer Scott Van Vliet has issued a warning to players regarding the dangers of purchasing fraudulent game codes. The warning follows a recent incident over the weekend where a group of user accounts in Japan were hit with automatic enforcement actions and bans under Xbox Community Standards after redeeming fraudulent game keys.

According to Xbox, these problematic codes were acquired through various reseller channels. While some third-party sellers and major retailers like Amazon and Walmart operate legitimately, less reputable avenues carry significant risks. Several players who were caught up in the enforcement wave unknowingly purchased and redeemed these fraudulent keys before contacting Xbox Support with their concerns.

Following investigations into the matter, the Xbox support team reversed course for those identified as innocent consumers. Xbox reinstated accounts that belonged to legitimate players who were inadvertently swept up in the automated enforcement action. The company stressed that it takes fraud seriously and will continue monitoring suspicious activity closely while working to protect unintentional victims from wrongful suspensions.

Although the initial wave of automatic bans was primarily highlighted in Japan, community reports suggest players in other regions, such as China, may have encountered similar problems. Observers note that players in regions like Japan sometimes turn to alternative reseller channels because official Xbox gift cards and games can occasionally be out of stock or unavailable through mainstream regional storefronts.

Xbox officials advise players to protect their accounts by purchasing games, subscriptions, and gift cards directly through the official Microsoft Store or from recognized, authorized retailers. Anyone utilizing third-party reseller platforms is encouraged to thoroughly research sellers to ensure codes come from reputable sources with solid track records, minimizing the risk of encountering account security issues or automated enforcement actions.
