Xbox CEO Refers to Project Helix as a 'Family of Devices'

Xbox CEO Asha Sharma has offered new clarification regarding Project Helix, describing the codename as a "family of devices" rather than a single piece of hardware. Sharma originally announced the project in March as a next-generation console, but speaking to BBC News, she noted that the team has been working on a "great next generation and a great family of devices for Helix." Sharma did not directly answer whether the upcoming hardware would feature a disc drive, though Microsoft recently announced a program aimed at digitizing physical games.

The broader hardware strategy builds upon a strategic multi-year partnership announced in 2025 between Microsoft and AMD. That collaboration centers on developing a portfolio of devices, including Microsoft's next-generation hardware, suggesting AMD will play a role in supporting the Helix device family. Additional rumors have suggested that third-party manufacturers might eventually sell their own Project Helix devices. When asked about this possibility, Xbox Vice President of Next Generation Jason Ronald stopped short of a denial, writing that Project Helix will be available as a first-party Xbox console.

Project Helix is designed with the capability to play PC games, but an official launch window remains unclear. AMD previously hinted in February that it could support a Microsoft next-generation Xbox launch in 2027. Meanwhile, Jason Ronald stated at a March conference that Helix will not reach its alpha development stage until 2027. Microsoft has promised to share more details about the initiative soon.
