WORLD END ECONOMiCA: Spice and Wolf Author's Moon-Based Stock Trading Visual Novel
Isuna Hasekura's sci-fi visual novel about lunar colonists navigating the stock market blends finance and coming-of-age drama across three episodes now available on Steam and Nintendo Switch.

WORLD END ECONOMiCA is a visual novel from indie developer Spicy Tails that weaves together science fiction and stock market drama in an unexpected combination. Written by Isuna Hasekura, known for the original Spice and Wolf light novels, the game unfolds across three episodes set on humanity's lunar colony over 16 years after migration began.
The story follows Haru, a boy born and raised on the moon who dreams of exploring uncharted territory. To fund this ambition, he enters the world of stock trading where fortunes can be made and lost rapidly. What distinguishes WORLD END ECONOMiCA is how it treats the stock market not as a backdrop for financial simulation, but as a stage for testing the characters' humanity and resolve.
The game anchors itself in two fundamental rules of trading: never take a loss, and never forget the first rule. However, human emotions like greed, fear, and impatience complicate rational decision-making. The narrative shifts from Haru's individual quest when he encounters Hagana, a genius investor with her own motivations. As the two clash over their different approaches and goals, the focus transitions from finance to a coming-of-age drama about ambition and self-discovery.
WORLD END ECONOMiCA treats the stock market as an "adventure" landscape where unknown market fluctuations, corporate machinations, and personal desires serve as the obstacles heroes must overcome. Unlike typical adventure stories with predetermined paths, the game offers no single correct answer, yet decisions yield concrete numerical consequences. This blend of economic realism with the passionate drive of chasing dreams creates tension between financial calculation and human conviction.
As the narrative progresses through Episodes 2 and 3, the timeline jumps forward four years at a time, and Haru's circumstances shift dramatically alongside the lunar economy's fluctuations. The game examines what characters are willing to risk for their dreams, illustrating stakes beyond mere numbers. While the title addresses technical financial concepts, these serve to clarify the human cost of success and failure rather than overwhelm players unfamiliar with investing.
Originally released independently in 2011, the first episode came to Steam in 2014, followed by Episode 2 in 2015 and Episode 3 in 2016. All three episodes are now available as a complete bundle at a discounted price. A Nintendo Switch port has also been released, making the full experience accessible across platforms.
