Worker-run indie studio KO_OP has confirmed the elimination of 13 roles following a financing drought. The developer, known for Goodbye Volcano High and Young Suns, explained the decision in a post on Bluesky. The studio stated that the games funding landscape has shifted radically over the last few years. Unlike previous project cycles, the team has been unable to secure funding for new projects while working on current engagements.

According to KO_OP, the choice was made democratically to guarantee studio survival rather than maximize projects. Team members are updated regularly on cash flow and were informed about the upcoming shortfall well in advance. Impacted positions include team leads and elected executives.

Profits from Young Suns, which launched on Xbox and is heading to additional platforms, will continue to be shared with affected team members. The studio is currently focusing on developing new prototypes and supporting its multiplayer life simulator. KO_OP has pledged to rehire as many laid-off workers as possible if the studio secures new funding in the coming months.
