William Pugh Reflects on Gaming History, Team Fortress 2, and Dota 2 Addiction
The co-designer of The Stanley Parable recently discussed his gaming habits, revealing over 1,600 hours in Dota 2 and a lifelong connection to Team Fortress 2.

William Pugh, co-designer of The Stanley Parable, recently shared insights into his personal Steam library and gaming history during a featured interview. Growing up playing shareware Mac titles like 1993 game Scruffy versus the Invaders from Mars, Pugh recounted his earliest PC gaming memory as playing Worms 4: Mayhem. That early online multiplayer experience opened a door that eventually led him into the cartoonish arenas of Team Fortress 2. Playing Team Fortress 2 introduced Pugh to the Source engine mapping community, which ultimately brought him into contact with fellow modder Davey Wreden to create The Stanley Parable.
Team Fortress 2 remains perma-installed on Pugh's computer, with the developer logging 1,583 hours in the title. He earned a Saxxy award that remains in his Steam inventory to turn players gold as a replacement for every class base melee weapon, primarily playing as the Engineer and the Spy. Reflecting on the game, Pugh noted that community-based server testing for work-in-progress maps was incredible. However, he also described public matchmaking in the game today as an absolute cesspit where players hear terrible things.
Despite his fond history with older titles, Dota 2 holds the highest number of hours in his Steam library at 1,603 hours. Pugh described his relationship with Dota 2 as a recovering addiction, stating that the game is not made of love. Instead, he characterized it as a game fuelled by hate and a desire to conquer, comparing it to chess due to its intense toxicity and complexity. He explained that the appeal lies in the complexity and taxing nature of the game, which demands 100 percent of a player's brain power and prevents them from thinking about other stresses.
Pugh is currently playing a lot of Deadlock, describing it as a pure experience that removes some of the pointless elements accumulated in the MOBA genre like mana and creep stacking. Alongside Deadlock, Pugh and his friend group have been playing Big Walk by House House, which he praised as a special game that could be game of the year. Professionally, Pugh is working on a new big game with his studio Crows Crows Crows, and acting as producer on the upcoming PlayStation 5 exclusive Hunter's Moon.
