Opinion: Why Xbox's Console Ads Could Be a Good Thing for Gaming
With the increasing costs of games and consoles creating barriers for everyday gamers, ad-supported game streaming models like the one Xbox is testing could help lower the cost of access.
The increasing price of games and hardware is creating a significant barrier for the everyday gamer. According to insights shared by Virginie Chesnais, CMO at the ad tech analytics platform Happydemics, advertising could potentially help lower the cost of access to gaming. Gamers have traditionally been wary of in-game advertisements due to common frustrations like disruptive redirects, deceptive content, or hard-to-find close buttons. A recent eMarketer study found that 52% of gamers would quit playing if they encountered multiple disruptive ad features. However, the same survey indicated that one in five gamers would play a title more frequently if the in-game advertisements were of high quality.
As Xbox tests its new ad-supported game streaming service amid rising costs, high-quality ads may find a practical home in the industry. Similar tiered approaches have proven successful in linear media, where services like Netflix and Disney offer consistent streaming alongside ad-supported options. If Xbox's strategy succeeds, it could retain paid subscribers while opening an untapped revenue stream. As noted in the analysis, ad-supported tiers can provide a pathway for players to enter the sector without large upfront purchases, making console gaming less of an exclusive premium service.
Xbox's current approach utilizes "around-the-game" or pre-game formats rather than disruptive intrinsic in-game ads. Happydemics data from 285 campaigns across the UK and North America demonstrate that in-game and around-the-game ads consistently outperform TV, social, and online ads in ad recall and attribution. Xbox has stated that these ads will be non-intrusive and placed before games start to protect the immersive experience. Furthermore, making the ads contextual and relevant will be key to ensuring players do not experience frustration.
While companies like EA and Xbox explore ad-based gaming to meet changing consumer financial landscapes, the strategy remains in uncharted territory regarding player reaction and long-term revenue generation. The exploration of ad-supported streaming reflects leadership risks taken by Xbox CEO Asha Sharma. Ultimately, if Xbox can execute these options successfully without harming player immersion, it could pave the way for broader accessibility and new revenue models across the gaming industry.
