What We've Been Playing: Battle Cats, Vampire Quests, and World of Warcraft's New Beta

Eurogamer's regular roundup of what the editorial team has been playing features a mix of indie gems, tactical strategy, and returning obsessions.

Bertie continues with Dawnwalker, a vampire-themed exploration game that has held their interest well after the review period ended. The experience has been a mix of genuinely inventive quests alongside unexpected bugs. One quest broke during review, locking two NPCs in perpetual combat and blocking progression entirely. The fix eventually arrived, but it yanked Bertie from another quest in the process, nearly breaking that one too. Recovery required hours of careful backtracking and creative use of the vampire blink ability to bypass obstacles, though a broken Sacred Stone ritual still leaves a chunk of the world inaccessible behind a permanent magical storm.

Kelsey picked up Mewgenics on console following its arrival a few weeks ago. The game's support for Switch 2's touch screen proved irresistible, turning any spare moment into extended sessions of breeding battle cats from the sofa. Between Mewgenics and reviewing Silent Hill Townfall, gaming time has expanded at the expense of social plans.

Mat has been deeply invested in Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave on Switch 2, particularly the character building mechanics. Min-maxing defensive units paired with weapons that counter specific enemy types creates satisfying tactical moments. A bow-wielding archer equipped with a dodge-boosting ring becomes a specialty counter against other archers. The social link segments offer welcomed breathers between combat encounters, grounding the conflict in character motivation. However, the exploration segments feel like padding, with mandatory walking between quest-givers despite fast-travel options limiting movement only to major locations.

Marie has found enjoyment in Untitled Goose Game on Switch 2, embracing the chaos of playing a criminal mastermind waterfowl spreading mayhem through theft, lockups, and strategic distraction.

Connor has been recaptured by World of Warcraft, despite previous efforts to resist. What began as brief curiosity about the game's appeal has become an evening fixture. The current access offers a level 1-20 slice of the full experience, which has made a strong impression. The new Skyborne starting zone Zephras Isle stands out for its flowing grasslands and towering celestial pillars, enhanced by new lighting effects. Connor anticipates the full release in November and expects the game to consume significantly more time after launch.
