Well Dweller launched today for Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass subscribers, and early reviews have placed the indie metroidvania in rare critical air. The game has achieved a 91 rating on Metacritic, driven by praise for its art style, challenging platforming, and polished gameplay mechanics.

Console Creatures awarded the game a perfect 10/10, calling it "an all-timer in the genre" and praising its charming creatures, varied enemy design, and constant sense of discovery. "There is always something to uncover, new creatures to befriend, and weird and excellently designed enemies to fight," the reviewer wrote. The outlet added that Well Dweller stands as "the best one yet from a very talented developer," referencing developer Kyle Thompson's previous work on Crypt Custodian.

Gamer Social Club and Loot Level Chill both scored the game 9.5/10. Gamer Social Club highlighted the game's beautiful landscapes, sinister bosses, ambient music, and character designs, calling it "a joy to play from start to finish." Loot Level Chill described it as "one of the most polished and captivating Metroidvanias I've played in years."

The critical consensus emphasizes Well Dweller's smooth pacing, intuitive combat, and memorable enemy design. One reviewer noted that the game's straightforward mechanics and more linear structure create "a consistently engaging sense of flow," though some veteran genre players may find it lacking in depth. The game's audiovisual presentation and level design drew repeated praise across reviews.

Not all critics were entirely convinced. Press Start Australia gave the game 7.5/10, suggesting that its accessible approach to the metroidvania formula leaves it in a middle ground. The outlet described it as "beginner friendly" but noted it "simply not bold enough to break new ground within the genre," calling it "a safe" choice for players considering the metroidvania space.

The game's critical performance on Xbox specifically sits lower, averaging 84 across four console reviews, though reactions remain positive overall. Well Dweller's launch has notably overshadowed Dune: Awakening, which was the anticipated Game Pass title heading into today's release.
