Uncharted Had Dynamic Difficulty to Slow Players Down and Combat Short Length, Says Former Designer

A former Naughty Dog developer reveals that the original Uncharted featured dynamic difficulty scaling primarily to slow down players and extend the game's short runtime.

According to former Naughty Dog developer Benson Russell, the dynamic difficulty system in the original Uncharted: Drake's Fortune was intentionally implemented to lengthen the game because development teams worried it was otherwise too short. Speaking in an interview with FRVR, Russell recalled that upon finishing the project, the team realized they had built a roughly five-hour game without multiplayer. Confronted with retail pricing expectations, Russell noted that charging $60 for a short experience would cause players to be frustrated, prompting the implementation of dynamic difficulty scaling to slow skilled players down.

Russell explained that the difficulty mechanism relied on time-based metrics. Through focus testing, developers gathered average completion times for combat encounters. If a player defeated an encounter faster than the established average, the game would automatically increase the difficulty. While the system was originally conceived to find a proper balance, Russell stated that by the end of development, it was heavily geared toward preventing players from rushing through the adventure.

The dynamic difficulty system appeared across the first three games in the original trilogy, though its tuning varied. According to Russell, the difficulty scaling in Uncharted 2 and Uncharted 3 was adjusted to match player skill levels rather than explicitly to delay or slow down progression. Russell worked at Naughty Dog for ten years, contributing to the first three Uncharted titles and The Last of Us before leaving in 2015. Additionally, commenting on potential future projects, Russell expressed doubts regarding a modern remake of Nathan Drake's debut adventure, suggesting instead that older or less accessible titles would benefit more from a complete overhaul.
