The Blood of Dawnwalker Console Tech Review Highlights Performance Flaws and Frame Pacing Issues
A technical analysis of The Blood of Dawnwalker reveals that despite a masterfully crafted gothic RPG experience by Rebel Wolves, console versions suffer from noticeable hitching, uneven frame pacing, and resolution compromises on patch 1.04.

Developer Rebel Wolves brings a gothic world to life in The Blood of Dawnwalker, featuring a revenge-rescue narrative where players control part-time vampire Coen. The game introduces a 30-day time limit and a day and night mechanic that switches Coen between human and vampire forms, granting unique abilities like wall-walking and combat teleportation. Despite these creative strengths, technical delivery on console exhibits notable friction even after applying patch 1.04.
Console performance varies significantly across platforms. The PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X offer three distinct configurations: a 30fps quality mode, a 40fps balanced mode, and a 60fps performance mode. While the 60fps mode runs reasonably well in open environments, dense forests, heavy fog, and combat scenarios cause frame-rates to drop into the high forties. The PlayStation 5 Pro achieves smoother performance out of the box due to boosted GPU clocks and superior memory bandwidth, putting it ahead of the Xbox Series X, with the base PlayStation 5 trailing behind.
Visual compromises are necessary to achieve higher frame-rates on base consoles. In performance mode, base hardware scales down native resolution significantly and replaces Unreal Engine 5 Lumen reflections on small water bodies with screen space reflections. Furthermore, shadow ranges and distant non-player character animation rates are reduced to alleviate CPU bottlenecks. Image upscaling relies on Unreal Engine's Temporal Super Resolution, which encounters visible noise on fine elements during camera movement when native resolutions drop to lower bounds.
Frame pacing remains a persistent issue across all current console iterations. Selecting the 30fps quality mode introduces an unevenly frame-paced cap that creates choppy motion, accompanied by frame-time spikes of up to 67 milliseconds. Camera cuts also introduce dropped frames and frame-time spikes of up to 120 milliseconds in dense areas. While the 60fps mode serves as a less distracting trade-off when paired with variable refresh rate displays, technical rough spots remain across the console landscape.
