After 31 years, one of the most beloved JRPGs on the Super Nintendo gets its first-ever North American release

Quintet's classic Super Nintendo JRPG Terranigma is finally coming to modern platforms and PC, marking its first-ever official North American release.

After three long decades, the classic Super Nintendo action RPG Terranigma is finally getting an official modern re-release. Originally developed by Quintet and published by Enix in 1995, the beloved title was never released in North America during its original run and had never been ported to any subsequent platforms. Publisher Clear River Games has announced that it is bringing the classic title to modern hardware.

According to the official press release, the new version of Terranigma is scheduled for release in "early 2027" across PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, Steam, and GOG. The debut trailer and Steam page indicate that the re-release preserves the look, feel, and gameplay of the original masterpiece, while thoughtfully adding a host of upgrades, tweaks, and bonus features designed to appeal to modern players.

In Terranigma, players control a young boy tasked with resurrecting the Earth, charting its history from primordial evolution through to the modern day. Developer Quintet built a strong reputation for Super NES classics such as ActRaiser and Illusion of Gaia, and Terranigma is widely celebrated as one of the finest role-playing games on the platform. While the game did see a limited release outside of Japan, launched by Nintendo in Europe and Australia in late 1996, any plans for a North American edition were halted by the closure of Enix's US office in late 1995 prior to its merger with Square.

Because the previous English version was limited to PAL regions, players faced technical hurdles due to regional display differences running at 50Hz rather than the 60Hz speed of the Japanese original. Complex rights ownership between Quintet and Square Enix previously prevented any official modern ports. Original artist Kamui Fujiwara expressed enthusiasm for the upcoming launch in a press release, hoping that the game's themes and atmosphere will resonate with today's audience as a living work rather than a relic of the past.
