Tariff Compensation Boosts PlayStation Operating Profit Despite Declining Hardware Sales
Sony released its first-quarter financial report for the current fiscal year, revealing that U.S. tariff refunds significantly increased PlayStation operating profits.

Sony Corporation released its financial results for the first quarter of the current fiscal year covering April through June 2026. The gaming division generated more revenue than any other sector for the company, bringing in 937.1 billion yen, which translates to approximately $5.83 billion. Total revenue for Sony as a whole reached 2.83 trillion yen, showing an 8 percent increase compared to the previous year.
PlayStation revenue remained largely flat with a 0.06 percent increase. Digital game sales and other game transactions accounted for 526.6 billion yen, while physical disc sales dropped by 9.7 percent to 20.5 billion yen. Total software sales across PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 reached 66.1 million copies, with 6 million of those being first-party titles from Sony.
Hardware sales experienced a decline of 9.8 percent down to 138.3 billion yen. Sony sold 1.6 million units of the PlayStation 5 during the quarter, bringing total lifetime console sales to 95.3 million units. Meanwhile, gaming services including PlayStation Plus, PlayStation Network, and advertising grew by 20.8 percent to 208.6 billion yen. The PlayStation Network reached a record 125 million monthly active users in June.
Despite the dip in hardware sales and flat revenue, the gaming division saw its operating profit jump by 37 percent to reach 202 billion yen. According to Sony, this profit growth was primarily driven by refunds from U.S. authorities concerning canceled tariffs. Operating profit gains were partially offset by increased expenses tied to work on the PlayStation 6 and corporate restructuring.
