Nintendo Switch 2 Update Improves Digital Game Sharing Between Consoles

Nintendo has released version 23.0.0 for the Switch 2, bringing a significant enhancement to how digital games are shared between devices. The update enables users to play a virtual game card on one console while keeping the other offline. Previously, both hybrid consoles needed to remain online to access stored titles. With this change, a parent can let a child play Super Mario Bros. Wonder on a Switch OLED, then turn off Wi-Fi on the older unit before switching to the Switch 2. On the newer console, an online license prompt appears, allowing the user to continue playing the same title without an active connection. The feature works through an online license system that prompts users when a virtual game card cannot be ejected from a powered-off or disconnected console. However, there is a limitation: only the account that originally purchased the digital game can play it. This means a child cannot boot a title with their own account if a parent bought it, which may require Nintendo to reconsider digital ownership models or introduce licensing fees for multiple accounts. Beyond digital sharing, the update also revives the Mii Maker on Switch 2, restoring access to music from the Wii, Wii U, and 3DS. This addition complements the broader Nintendo ecosystem improvements happening this week, including the 40th-anniversary release of The Legend of Zelda and a general Nintendo Direct event. Families will find the virtual game card feature particularly useful for coordinating play across different hardware, though the restriction on account-based access remains a point of discussion among users.
