Why Star Wars: Galactic Racer won’t support split-screen multiplayer

Developer Fuse Games has confirmed that Star Wars: Galactic Racer will not feature local split-screen multiplayer when it launches this October. While split-screen was a memorable staple of the original Star Wars: Episode 1 Racer, bringing local head-to-head racing home, Fuse Games CEO Matt Webster revealed that implementing the feature was technically a “stretch too far” for the new project.

According to Webster, optimizing a split-screen mode often demands sacrifices in visual fidelity and performance. Because the team wanted to prioritize a seamless “big screen” experience focused on high frame rates, graphical fidelity, and deep immersion, those compromises were not considered worthwhile. Webster noted that split-screen multiplayer was not something considered from the outset of development, as the team chose to pour its resources into maximizing the single-screen Star Wars experience.

Although local split-screen has been omitted, Star Wars: Galactic Racer will offer robust online multiplayer options. Up to 12 players can participate in online quick races or compete in the Multiplayer Tour mode, which spans multiple planets and six rounds, allowing participants to wager on race positions and unlock parts to upgrade their vehicles. Additionally, the game will support eight-player matches specifically for podracers online, marking a first for a Star Wars racing game.

Set during the original trilogy era, the title features arcade-influenced handling, vehicle customization, and Burnout-style crashes. Fuse Games has officially announced that the game has gone gold and is slated for an October 6 release across PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S, alongside a Nintendo Switch 2 version mentioned in early reports.
