GSC Game World has released update 2.0 and its first major expansion for S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: The Heart of Chornobyl. Titled Cost of Hope, the expansion launched alongside a major free upgrade that introduces a new engine version, a graphical overhaul, improved lighting, and organic foliage. The update also addresses under-the-hood issues such as enemies shooting through walls and unexpected overpopulation in certain areas, alongside new contested points of interest like campfires and bus stops where mutants and stalkers cross paths.

Development on the title took seven years, with creation in Kyiv spanning more than four years of the war against Russia. CEO Ievgen Grygorovych and creative director Maria Grygorovych noted that the studio has had to spread staff across locations like Poland and Prague while maintaining operations in Kyiv, where electricity outages remain common. Despite these challenges, the base game sold over a million copies in its first two days following its launch in November 2024 and achieved an 87% positive player reaction on Steam.

The Cost of Hope expansion explores the long-running conflict between the Duty and Freedom factions. Players can explore new locations such as the Iron Forest, CNPP, and Spatial Bubble. Full production on the expansion lasted roughly 15 months after early stages began at the end of 2024. The expansion is available as part of the Ultimate Edition of the base game or as a standalone purchase for $30 USD or EUR. To celebrate the release, GSC Game World launched a dedicated website where players can take a quiz to vote for their preferred faction and compete for limited Stalker-themed prizes. The studio is currently working on a second DLC for the game as well as unannounced new projects.
