Sony Reports $766 Million Write-Off From Bungie Setbacks in Annual Report
Sony Corporation released its financial report for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2026, revealing that Bungie's underperformance led to significant asset write-offs.

Sony Corporation released its fiscal year report for the period ending on March 31, 2026, detailing key financial metrics for its gaming division. PlayStation surpassed other Sony divisions in revenue by earning 4.68 trillion yen, which equals roughly $29.8 billion. This total accounted for 37.5 percent of the entire corporation's revenue, though it grew by only 0.3 percent compared to the previous year.
Game sales generated the most money for PlayStation at 2.64 trillion yen, representing a 5.3 percent increase year-over-year. DLCs, microtransactions, and other in-game purchases accounted for 51.5 percent of this game sales revenue. Conversely, revenue from console and other gaming hardware sales dropped significantly by 16.6 percent down to 944.4 billion yen, while gaming services revenue increased by 13.9 percent to reach 763.1 billion yen.
Studio Bungie did not perform well during the period, resulting in Sony writing down part of its assets twice. Sony recorded a write-down of 31.5 billion yen during the second quarter and an additional 88.6 billion yen during the fourth quarter. The company also wrote down 18.3 billion yen in capitalized development costs throughout the year. Combined, these factors contributed to a total write-off of $766 million.
According to Sony, PlayStation's annual operating profit would have reached a record level without these write-offs. Even with the financial impact, operating profit still grew by 11.7 percent to reach 463.3 billion yen. During the fiscal year, Sony sold 16 million PlayStation 5 consoles, marking an 11 percent decline and bringing total console sales to 93.7 million units. Combined software sales for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 reached 317.9 million copies, representing a 4.8 percent increase. Furthermore, the PlayStation Network reached 125 million monthly active users by the end of March.
