Sony Patent Shows PS5 Controllers Could Enable Direct Payments
A newly discovered patent suggests Sony is exploring technology that would let players make payments through their DualSense controllers by bringing a smartphone close to the device.

Sony has filed a patent that could transform PS5 controllers into payment devices, according to a discovery by Patentlyze reported by Insider Gaming.
The patent describes a system where players could make payments directly through their smartphones using the DualSense controller. The process would work by bringing a smartphone close to the controller, which would trigger a prompt on the phone to complete the transaction. Once approved, the purchase would then be reflected on the PS5 console.
The technology is designed as a quality-of-life feature for players who lack traditional payment methods saved to their console. Instead of entering card details directly into the system, the controller would serve as a bridge to transfer payment information from a smartphone to the console.
According to the patent diagrams, the feature could also enable players to purchase gift cards by bringing a physical card near the controller.
Sony has not confirmed this feature will reach PlayStation. Patents represent early-stage ideas that companies may develop, modify, or abandon entirely. The company could choose to implement this technology in the future, change how it functions, or decide not to pursue it at all.
