The Silent Hill movie franchise is reportedly being rebooted with a bold new direction following the disappointing performance of Return to Silent Hill earlier this year. According to Dread Central, filmmakers are planning a fresh start that will offer a new take on the horror property.

Return to Silent Hill, directed by Christophe Gans, flopped at the box office after arriving as the third film in the franchise. The 2012 film Silent Hill: Revelation had already struggled critically, scoring just 8% on Rotten Tomatoes. In contrast, the original 2006 Silent Hill film, also directed by Gans, remains the most well-regarded entry, following a mother searching for her daughter in the mysterious town and adapting elements from the first game.

The franchise reboot announcement comes just days after Zach Cregger's Resident Evil film opened to $108 million worldwide, the strongest opening weekend of any Resident Evil movie to date. Unlike traditional video game adaptations that directly adapt a specific game's story, Cregger's approach tells a new story set within the Resident Evil universe. The success suggests audiences are interested in films that build on game worlds rather than simply retelling existing narratives.

Details about the new Silent Hill film direction remain thin, but the timing aligns with growing interest in the Silent Hill games themselves. The Silent Hill series, which began in 1999 and spans eight main entries plus multiple spin-offs, is regarded for its atmospheric and psychological horror elements. The franchise recently expanded with Silent Hill: Townfall launching on September 24.

The original Silent Hill film starred Radha Mitchell and Sean Bean and followed a couple who adopt a girl with mysterious connections to the town. Silent Hill: Revelation continued that storyline in 2012, while Return to Silent Hill adapted the events of Silent Hill 2.
