Shannon Loftis, a veteran of nearly three decades at Microsoft who held positions including GM at Xbox Entertainment Studios and Studio Head at World's Edge Studios, has criticized Xbox CEO Asha Sharma's leadership approach in the wake of recent layoffs affecting multiple studios.
Loftis, who joined Microsoft in 1993 and contributed to the Age of Empires franchise during her tenure at World's Edge, posted her concerns on social media following news of the layoffs. In a post on LinkedIn addressing those affected, particularly at World's Edge, she wrote: "Crushed to hear the news from Xbox today. I am not sure how any of these moves constitute 'clarity' but for those impacted, particularly World's Edge people – you are SO much more than this."
In a since-deleted post on Threads, Loftis took a sharper tone, questioning the alignment between Sharma's public statements and her actions. "Super funny that Asha Sharma said 'clarity is kindness' to the WSJ last week then did a half layoff today," Loftis wrote. "I guess Damocles' Sword is a form of clarity, what do I know? Please, Asha, publish more 'cool' photos from your Japan Kojima-maxxing trip. That's the kind of leadership game developers need."
Loftis was referencing images Sharma had posted while traveling to Japan for the Tokyo Game Show and to meet Hideo Kojima at his studio. The posts came as Sharma publicly emphasized the value of clear communication during a period of organizational change at Xbox.
Loftis retired from Microsoft in 2022 after 29 years with the company. At that time, she reflected on her career in the Age of Empires community, stating: "After 29 years at Microsoft, I've decided to retire to spend more time with family, on my hobbies, and of course playing games. It has been the greatest honor of my game development career to be part of this community."
This is not the first time Loftis has publicly addressed Xbox's personnel challenges. During the July round of Xbox layoffs, she expressed solidarity with affected staff, noting: "Your worth is not defined by your job, and you have resources to help you move forward. You are not alone."
