Roblox Announces Offline Play, Browser Support, and Standalone Game Apps
At RDC, Roblox unveiled several major updates including offline play, browser-based gaming without app installations, and standalone applications for individual games.

Roblox has announced several major technical updates aimed at changing how players access and experience games on its platform. Unveiled during the Roblox Developers Conference (RDC), the platform is introducing offline play capabilities, browser-based gaming, and the option for creators to launch standalone apps for specific games.
The upcoming offline functionality, referred to as Game On Roblox, will allow players to launch and play games without an active internet connection. Roblox leader Nick Tornow explained during a press briefing that this feature will support single-player campaigns, flexible play sessions, and seamless transitions if a player suddenly loses their network connection, such as during a flight or in a remote area. Under this model, creators can build games that function both online and offline.
In addition to offline capabilities, Roblox is expanding its reach by introducing browser-based play. Moving away from the requirement to launch the dedicated Roblox app, users will soon be able to play games directly within their web browsers. According to Tornow, this update will dramatically expand supported devices by removing the friction of downloading and installing software. Players can simply click a link shared via text or social media to drop directly into a game. Roblox CEO Dave Baszucki noted that the team achieved this by retargeting the app to WebAssembly.
Furthermore, Roblox is enabling creators to distribute their experiences as native standalone apps. Historically, players had to open the central Roblox application to find and launch individual games. The new standalone option allows creators to offer individual versions of their games directly to players, while still leveraging the core Roblox engine, identity systems, accounts, safety features, and economy under the hood. Multiplatform co-play will remain active by default, allowing users to play together across standalone apps and the traditional Roblox platform.
Beyond distribution changes, Roblox is updating its engine and user interface framework. The platform will support 2.5D games using native orthographic camera modes. It is also adding new UI capabilities to its framework, including shadows, blur effects, and 2D particle systems.
