PC and PlayStation sales in Japan surge 13% in H1 2026, driven by Resident Evil Requiem
Resident Evil Requiem became a major driver of growth in Japan's PC and PlayStation market during the first half of 2026, selling an estimated 2.6 million units on Steam alone in its first month.

PC and PlayStation unit sales in Japan grew 13% to 21 million during the first half of 2026, according to Sensor Tower's latest Japan Game Market Insights report. Capcom's Resident Evil Requiem led the surge, becoming the top-selling title across both platforms.
Resident Evil Requiem achieved its strongest first-month performance on Steam, moving an estimated 2.6 million units. Sensor Tower attributed the success to sustained engagement, with Steam players averaging 25 hours of playtime, the highest among comparable titles in the franchise. A Steam store page established 264 days before release generated significant wishlist activity and early awareness across the United States, China, Japan, Europe, and other markets.
"The result underscores Steam's growing importance to premium Japanese games, giving Capcom immediate access to a large global audience while extending the series beyond its traditional console strength," Sensor Tower said. The game surpassed eight million units by July and boosted Capcom's financial results alongside Pragmata. The publisher also reported ongoing sales growth from Resident Evil 4 and Resident Evil 2.
Capcom ranked as the top PC and PlayStation publisher by units sold in Japan during H1 2026. Sensor Tower's Japan data covers Steam and PlayStation platforms only.
Beyond Resident Evil Requiem, the broader Japan market showed mixed signals. Mobile gaming revenue declined 5.1% year-on-year to ¥1.56 trillion. Japan retained its position as Asia's second-largest mobile market, generating twice as much in-app purchase revenue as South Korea. eFootball led Japan's highest-grossing mobile games, followed by Monster Strike, Last War: Survival, and Whiteout Survival. RPGs captured nearly one-third of mobile IAP revenue at 32.8%.
