Resident Evil Requiem tops $500m as older games outsell new film's impact
Resident Evil Requiem has generated over $500 million in revenue since its February 2026 launch, but the new film adaptation didn't boost game sales as much as Capcom's price discounts.

Resident Evil Requiem continues to dominate the horror franchise's sales performance, crossing $500 million in revenue according to estimates from Alinea Analytics. The ninth mainline entry, released in late February 2026, reached eight million copies sold by June 30, just four months after launch.
The film adaptation, directed by Zach Cregger, set a series-best opening weekend with over $108 million worldwide. However, its impact on game sales proved modest compared to Capcom's aggressive pricing strategy. Requiem's daily revenue on PS5 dropped approximately 4 percent when the film released, declining from around $284,000 to $271,000 per day, as the lower price offset increased demand.
The real story lies in Resident Evil's broader performance. Between July 1, 2025 and June 30, 2026, six games in the franchise each sold over three million copies: RE Requiem (eight million), RE 4 Remake (five million), RE Village (3.6 million), RE 7 (three million), and the RE 2 and RE 3 remakes (approximately four million each). For comparison, RE 4 Remake has generated over $600 million across its three-year lifespan.
PS5 emerged as Requiem's dominant platform with four million copies sold, of which 30 percent were physical versions despite Sony's shift toward digital.
While the film's opening didn't dramatically shift Requiem's sales, it benefited other franchise entries. RE 2 Remake saw a 48 percent jump in daily players across all platforms during the film's opening weekend, with RE 3 Remake experiencing a 25 percent increase. Capcom's strategy of discounting multiple Resident Evil games eight days before the film's theatrical release proved more effective at driving sales than the movie itself.
The franchise's sustained performance reflects Capcom's remake approach. A Code Veronica remake is currently in development and expected to release within the next fiscal year. Even older titles like RE 6, released in 2012, continue selling significantly across current platforms, demonstrating the franchise's enduring appeal.
