Resident Evil Movie Breaks Franchise Box Office Record With $100M Domestic
Zach Cregger's Resident Evil film has surpassed $100 million domestically after just two weekends, setting a new franchise record and nearly doubling the previous high.

Zach Cregger's Resident Evil movie has broken another box office milestone, crossing $100 million domestically after its second weekend in theaters. The film already held the franchise record for biggest opening weekend, and now it has claimed the title for highest domestic total as well.
The previous domestically highest-grossing Resident Evil film was 2010's Resident Evil: Afterlife, which earned $60.1 million. Cregger's version has nearly doubled that figure at $103.5 million so far. Globally, the movie has accumulated $196.5 million against its reported $75 million production budget, not counting marketing costs.
While the new film is outperforming all recent entries, it remains behind 2016's Resident Evil: The Final Chapter in worldwide earnings. That film made $312 million globally, though it earned only $26.8 million domestically.
The franchise's theatrical history has been mixed. Director Paul W.S. Anderson's six films starring Milla Jovovich combined for over $1 billion worldwide despite inconsistent critical and commercial performance for individual entries. The lowest-performing theatrical release was 2021's Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City, directed by Johannes Roberts and starring Kaya Scodelario, which made only $17 million domestically before the franchise entered a hiatus.
Constantin, the franchise rights holder, halted theatrical Resident Evil projects until Cregger pitched his concept. While Cregger has indicated he has ideas for continuing the story, he has also stated he is finished with franchise filmmaking. Whether a sequel materializes remains unclear.
