Andy Nguyen, the lead developer of the PS5 Linux project, has stepped away from the effort. "I am stepping away from the PS5 scene and stopping all my work on PS5 Linux," Nguyen posted on X. "After pouring my heart and months of my life into it, including plans to finish PS5 Pro support and release in 2027, it's all down the sink."

The project used hypervisor bugs to run Ubuntu Linux on PS5 consoles by bypassing Sony's security measures. Users had to maintain older firmware versions to prevent Sony patches from closing the exploited vulnerabilities. Nguyen was developing PS5 Pro support but relied on what he described as the "only hypervisor bug left."

Nguyen blamed the community's evolution for his departure. "The scene used to be a group of highly talented researchers, but now it is just a bunch of noobs using LLMs and writing hacks they don't even understand," he said. "Slop kiddies found the only hypervisor bug left, which I had also found a while ago, and decided to report to Sony."

According to Nguyen, he asked the developers who discovered the bug to delay disclosure until after GTA 6's release, allowing players to legally purchase the game and use Linux. "They agreed to wait, but not a day passed and they decided to waste it instead," Nguyen said. Sony will likely patch the vulnerability, effectively ending the project's viability on current and future PS5 hardware.
