Pokémon Pokopia: Bubbly Basin DLC Deep Look

Few life simulators choose to navigate both terrestrial and marine routes, but Pokémon Pokopia tests the waters of its identity and proves itself a competent swimmer. It is hard to believe that the popular life sim was only released in early March, as players did not have to wait long for updates. Alongside the announcement of its free underwater update, The Pokémon Company and developer Omega Force simultaneously announced a paid three-part Expansion Pass, with the first downloadable content introducing an underwater town known as Bubbly Basin.

Bubbly Basin expands significantly on existing core crafting systems and mechanics. Budding chefs can now grow fruits like watermelons to craft smoothies, while specific Pokémon possess the Scrub ability to clean grubby pearls for item crafting. The expansion brings a wealth of new items and collectibles, offering imperial, marine, and submarine styles of furniture, decorations, and toys. The new town hosts roughly fifty new Pokémon that fit naturally into a marine ecosystem, including Corsola, Horsea, and Sharpedo. Players can befriend these new Pokémon, build homes, and restore habitats to a serene ambient soundtrack alongside the tropical tune of the new Dream Island.

The introduction of the Dive mechanic completely transforms how players interact with the world. Prior to Bubbly Basin, players traversed water bodies via the Surf mechanic. With Dive, the world feels larger, allowing players to explore areas previously inaccessible, even in earlier towns. Players gain newfound freedom to build on land, sea, or hybrid locations, ranging from an underwater kingdom on the sea bed to a partially submerged sinking modern city aesthetic. Activating Dive is simple: players automatically gain a protective bubble enabling indefinite underwater stays. While underwater surfing grants extra speed, its finicky mechanics can feel floaty or challenging to navigate initially, though normal swimming remains available as a slower alternative.

Narratively, Bubbly Basin leans on the lighter side. Players unlock Dive by speaking with Professor Tangrowth in Bleak Beach, checking out a mysterious pop-up island, and traveling through an underwater gate. Players then assist Popplio, the seventh-generation water starter, in restoring the town to an underwater paradise while fulfilling requests for other Pokémon. While the overarching narrative is brief, players can uncover intriguing snippets of lore through human records and relics. Certain Pokémon befriended in previous towns express interest in visiting Bubbly Basin, though Professor Tangrowth declines due to certain difficulties, requiring players to communicate remotely or travel back.

Although some may find the price tag and upfront commitment to unreleased content disagreeable, the Pokémon Pokopia Expansion Pass is off to a strong start. Bubbly Basin offers novel content to keep dedicated and casual players engaged for hours, breaking free of previous design limitations and propelling the title toward further success.
