Open-Source Tool Unlocks Higher Bitrates on PlayStation Portal Without Jailbreaking

A community-created tool lets PlayStation Portal owners request higher PS5 Remote Play bitrates up to 100 Mbps without modifying firmware, with early testers reporting noticeably cleaner video quality.

A new open-source tool is giving PlayStation Portal owners the ability to request higher PS5 Remote Play bitrates without jailbreaking or modifying the device's firmware.

The creator shared the project on r/PlaystationPortal and tested profiles at 65 Mbps, 100 Mbps, and an experimental 200 Mbps setting. With the 65 Mbps profile, the PS5 reported a target around 63.1 Mbps while the Portal observed approximately 58 Mbps. The 100 Mbps setting peaked around 84 Mbps on the creator's setup, while another Portal owner reported a peak of 96.1 Mbps during testing, though that test included some disconnects.

The tool works by changing the bitrate requested when a new PS5 Remote Play session starts without altering the Portal's 1080p resolution setting or permanently changing the device. Each new session negotiates its own settings, and reconnecting restores standard behaviour. The 65 Mbps profile has received the most testing so far. One Reddit user separately confirmed that 65 Mbps worked and produced a noticeably cleaner image.

The 200 Mbps option remains experimental. During testing, the PS5 reported targets around 158 to 166 Mbps, but the creator hasn't established sustained throughput at those rates. Florian Grill, developer of PXPlay, contributed to the Reddit discussion and shared his own findings, noting that bitrates above roughly 100 Mbps haven't produced a benefit in his investigation. Higher bitrates mean less video compression but can put more pressure on networks, potentially increasing video latency on less stable connections.

The project's latest v0.3.0-preview.1 prerelease adds Windows manual launchers, an experimental automatic relay using Task Scheduler, and native Linux preview with systemd support. The creator says 33 offline tests passed on macOS. Manual mode uses the computer during connection setup before restoring the direct PS5-to-Portal path, while automatic mode keeps the computer involved in outbound control traffic with video still traveling directly from PS5 to Portal. The developer hasn't yet validated automatic Windows and Linux modes on physical systems.

PlayStation added 1080p High Quality mode to Portal in March 2026, which uses a higher bitrate than 1080p Standard for Remote Play and Cloud Streaming, though the company hasn't published exact bitrates. The tool only affects local PS5 Remote Play negotiation and doesn't change PlayStation cloud streaming functionality.
