Report Indicates Physical Discs Make Up Around 35 Percent of Recent PlayStation 5 Exclusives
A new report from Alinea Analytics highlights the revenue split between physical and digital sales for major PlayStation 5 games since 2022.

A new market report indicates that physical disc sales still make up a substantial portion of purchases for recent PlayStation 5 exclusives. Sony recently announced a decision to move away from making physical discs for upcoming PlayStation 5 games starting in January 2028. This upcoming shift previously caused community discussions regarding the future of physical media in an increasingly digital market.
Data shared by Alinea Analytics reveals that first-party Sony games released since 2022 have sold between 32 percent and 47 percent of their copies through physical media, with the exception of one project. The firm outlined revenue and sales divides across seven distinct titles. Marvel's Spider-Man 2 generated 1.2 billion dollars in revenue with a split of 65 percent digital and 35 percent physical. Ghost of Yotei reached 400 million dollars with 62.4 percent digital and 37.6 percent physical sales. Astro Bot recorded 275 million dollars with 53.2 percent digital and 46.8 percent physical copies sold.
Other titles in the report include Helldivers II at 91.7 percent digital and 8.3 percent physical with 235 million dollars in revenue. Stellar Blade achieved 185 million dollars with 56.7 percent digital and 43.3 percent physical sales. Rise of the Ronin brought in 152 million dollars with a split of 67.7 percent digital and 32.3 percent physical. Finally, Death Stranding 2 On the Beach posted 129 million dollars with 58.2 percent digital and 41.8 percent physical sales. While these figures show strong physical media participation, manufacturing and distribution costs remain significant factors that digital distribution avoids to secure higher revenue.
