Nintendo Targets Over 400 Switch Emulator Repositories With GitHub DMCA Takedowns
Nintendo has issued seven DMCA anti-circumvention notices on GitHub, resulting in the removal of more than 400 emulator repositories, including Yuzu forks, Suyu, and Skyline.
Nintendo has intensified its legal actions against Nintendo Switch emulation, reportedly filing multiple DMCA anti-circumvention notices to remove hundreds of code repositories from GitHub in a single day. According to a report from Nintendo Everything, the Japanese gaming giant issued seven distinct DMCA notices targeting software that allows users to run Switch games on unauthorized hardware.
The coordinated legal push successfully targeted and disabled more than 400 emulator repositories hosted on the platform. Among the affected codebases were copies of the Suyu emulator, various forks of the now-defunct Yuzu emulator, and the Skyline emulator. As a result of these DMCA filings, the vast majority of these repositories have been taken offline.
This massive sweep represents a continuing effort by Nintendo to protect its intellectual property and restrict the proliferation of software capable of bypassing the technical protection measures of its consoles. By utilizing DMCA anti-circumvention claims, Nintendo has focused on removing derivative projects and alternative emulator distributions that surfaced after previous high-profile legal shutdowns.
