Nintendo Releases Version 23.0.0 Firmware Update to Fix Switch Vulnerability

Nintendo has released a major system firmware update for the Nintendo Switch. Version 23.0.0 includes a fix for a console vulnerability confirmed in limited scenarios. The issue can occur when scanning a QR code while using the Send to Smartphone feature in the Album, or when using a physical kart to play Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit.

According to Nintendo, the security flaw requires a bad actor to directly scan the QR code displayed on the console or television screen. If an unauthorized third party can scan the code, they could potentially run unauthorized code on the console or obtain stored information. The issue affects Nintendo Switch systems running any software version earlier than Version 23.0.0. Nintendo notes that this vulnerability cannot be exploited to obtain console information on the Switch 2.

Nintendo recommends that all users update their consoles to the latest version. For players who cannot update right away, the company suggests taking specific preventive measures. Users should ensure they are in an environment where a third party cannot scan the QR code on the screen when using the Album feature or playing Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit. Additionally, players are advised to avoid using smart devices or karts belonging to other people.
