Next Mainline Horizon Game Still ‘Years Away’ From Completion

Fans waiting for the next mainline installment in the Horizon franchise may have a lengthy wait ahead of them. According to a recent report, the next single-player Horizon game from Guerrilla Games remains years away from completion because the studio has allocated the vast majority of its developers to other projects.

Reporting on the studio's development plans, journalist Jason Schreier noted that a tiny team has been plotting out the next single-player Horizon game, but it has not yet entered full-scale production. The majority of Guerrilla Games has instead been working on the multiplayer spin-off title, Horizon Hunters Gathering. That project has faced its own hurdles; following negative feedback during testing and playtests, the online action game is reportedly undergoing a substantial rework to strip out live-service elements and shift toward a more traditional co-op experience.

Previously, a leaker named TCMF suggested a third Horizon game could potentially launch in 2027, though industry reports indicate that timeline is unlikely given the small team currently assigned to the single-player project. Beyond the mainline series and Horizon Hunters Gathering, other projects tied to the intellectual property include an MMORPG titled Horizon Steel Frontiers slated for next year, alongside a planned Horizon movie adaptation.

The franchise first launched in 2017 with Horizon Zero Dawn on PlayStation 4, followed by Horizon Forbidden West in 2022 across PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5, and a subsequent remaster of the original game for Sony's newer hardware. While multiple projects are currently in development across the wider Horizon universe, players hoping for the next major single-player chapter will need to exercise patience as Guerrilla Games works through its current slate of titles.
