Next-Gen Xbox Prioritises 'Affordability' as Rumours of Expensive PS6 Continue

Xbox boss Asha Sharma indicates that next-gen Xbox development, known as Project Helix, is focusing on affordability and efficiency amidst widespread component crisis challenges.

Microsoft is emphasizing affordability and efficiency as central pillars for its next-generation Xbox hardware, currently known under the project name Project Helix. Speaking fresh out of Gamescom to the BBC, Xbox boss Asha Sharma highlighted these two concepts as crucial areas that Microsoft is actively exploring for future hardware development.

These statements emerge amidst ongoing uncertainty surrounding next-generation hardware across the industry. The ongoing electronics component crisis has driven up production costs for consoles, a factor that previously led Sony to increase prices across all PlayStation 5 models. Because of these manufacturing hurdles, industry analysts have raised concerns that upcoming hardware generations could carry extremely high retail prices, with some speculation suggesting a potential launch cost exceeding $1,000 for Sony's prospective PS6.

Addressing the shifting landscape, Sharma noted that the wider industry faces new financial barriers. According to Sharma, the entire industry must begin to innovate on affordability and efficiency in ways that manufacturers have not previously had to tackle, aiming to navigate the massive obstacles currently facing mainstream gaming.
