Mojang expands creator ecosystem team to compete with Roblox and Fortnite
Minecraft studio is hiring across partner developer relations and creator monetization roles as Microsoft positions the platform as a competitor to user-generated content rivals.

Mojang Studios is expanding its creator ecosystem team with multiple new hires focused on partner developer relations and creator monetization, signaling Microsoft's commitment to positioning Minecraft as a major platform for user-generated content.
Over the past two weeks, Mojang opened job listings for principal and senior program manager roles in partner developer relations, along with a senior director position for creator monetization. An earlier posting sought a director of creator programs and ecosystems marketing. The listings directly reference competing platforms, with one principal role describing a responsibility to drive "defending against competing platforms (Roblox, Fortnite/UEFN, Unity, Fab) through better developer experience, tooling, and enablement at portfolio scale."
The hiring push reflects Microsoft's broader strategy for its gaming division. Xbox CEO Asha Sharma established the goal of making Minecraft the "world's creator platform" in a July memo shared with company staff. The effort also comes after Mojang head of studios Helen Chiang was appointed to Microsoft's chief operating officer role amid Xbox leadership changes.
Mojang's definition of "creator" encompasses both content creators and influencers who use Minecraft, as well as game developers building custom experiences on the platform. For the development side, the studio uses terms like "developer" or "partner developer."
CJ Timmoneri, CEO of Minecraft partner developer studio Starfish Studios, welcomed the expansion. "Mojang has always supported us, but this makes it clear, publicly, that they see us as professional creators building real businesses," Timmoneri said. "That's also why these roles are necessary. Building a real business takes real infrastructure."
The job descriptions suggest an initial focus on lowering barriers to entry for new creators and developers, rather than only expanding tools for established ones. However, the creation of a monetization director role indicates that supporting full-fledged creator businesses is part of the long-term roadmap. Timmoneri noted that starting with accessibility makes strategic sense. "Lowering the barrier to entry is the foundation, and as creators grow, the tools for more established businesses can grow with them," he said. "Roles like these are a good sign that's where things are headed."
