Minecraft's Fourth Dimension, The Sift, Arrives in 2027
Mojang Studios revealed The Sift at Minecraft Live in September 2026, introducing the first new dimension to Minecraft in over 14 years. The colorful realm will launch in 2027 for Java and Bedrock Edition, joining the Overworld, Nether, and End.
Minecraft is getting its fourth dimension. Mojang Studios announced The Sift at Minecraft Live on September 26, 2026, marking the first new dimension added to the game since the End arrived in 2011.
The Sift will release in Minecraft Java and Bedrock Edition in 2027, though no specific month has been announced. Mojang describes it as a colorful place filled with souls. Players will be able to explore it before its full release in Minecraft Dungeons II, which launches September 29, 2026. In that game, players reach The Sift through rifts, and the dimension contains named areas called the Meadow and the Carapace.
The broadcast revealed a blue, bunny-like mob living in The Sift. The Minecraft Wiki lists it as the "blub," though Mojang has not officially named it.
Many details remain unconfirmed. Mojang has not yet revealed how players will enter The Sift in the main game, whether it will have a boss, what resources it offers, whether it features weather or a day cycle, or whether beds will function there. These mechanics differ significantly across Minecraft's existing dimensions.
The Overworld, where all players start, is the only dimension with a day and night cycle and weather. It stretches 384 blocks vertically from Y level -64 to 320 and contains the most biomes, structures, and ore types. Beds work only here, setting spawn points and skipping nights.
The Nether, added in October 2010, operates under different rules. Water evaporates instantly, beds explode, and one block traveled equals eight blocks in the Overworld, making it valuable for fast travel. It contains five biomes: Nether Wastes, Soul Sand Valley, Crimson Forest, Warped Forest, and Basalt Deltas. Key resources include ancient debris for netherite crafting, nether quartz, and blaze rods.
The End, introduced in November 2011, is a dark dimension of floating islands surrounded by the void. Beds and respawn anchors explode there. Players must defeat the Ender Dragon on the central island to access the outer islands, which contain End cities and resources like elytra and shulker shells.
The Sift represents Mojang's first major dimensional expansion since development shifted toward other content. A "Sky Dimension" was planned earlier in development but was scrapped, with its code eventually repurposed for the End.
