Microsoft patents system to pause games for advertisements
A newly reported patent from Microsoft describes a content management system that would suspend gameplay to display ads, with a credit system allowing players to earn ad-free time.

Microsoft has patented a system designed to pause games and display advertisements during gameplay, according to reports from Tom's Hardware and Respawn First citing US patent 202610260258 A1.
The patent, titled "Contextually Aware Management of Interactive Software Application Access," describes a content management system that "may suspend a user's interaction with the interactive software application based on the promoted content trigger event" and "may present the promoted audiovisual content to the user."
Microsoft proposes a credit-based model where players could exchange tokens to delay or avoid ad suspensions, earning ad-free gameplay time. The company notes that video games do not accommodate traditional commercial breaks like television, requiring an alternative approach to ad delivery.
The system is designed to monitor gameplay and avoid showing ads during critical or intensive moments, though implementation details remain limited to the patent filing.
Patents do not guarantee commercial deployment. Xbox's Chief Strategy Officer Matthew Ball has publicly supported in-game advertising, while EA has launched EA Advertising, a platform for "in-game integrations, creative partnerships, and scalable advertising capabilities." However, historical precedent suggests consumer backlash can influence decisions. Sony's 2009 patent for voice-activated advertising never materialized in consumer products.
